Cypresses

Vincent paints cypress trees in Arles, Saint Remy de Provence and a few in Auvers Sur Oise with many of his contemporaries agreeing with his brother Theo that he is “on to something” in his portrayals. He struggles to weave in the black and darker hues he sees and is pleased with some of his final products. In his letters to Theo he reveals how he finds them to be both majestic and emblematic of south of France and very challenging to capture on canvas.
