Description:

This is the third of three double wide canvases Vincent writes to Theo about in late June of 1890, about a month before he dies.  Probably intended to show together with “Undergrowth with Two Figures” and “Wheat Fields near Auvers”, this heavily stroked canvas is believed to have been done in one day.  The painting mixes varying shades of greens and yellows with a sky lit by a sun we cannot see.  The Chateau d’ Auvers is depicted only in this painting even though Vincent painted around 80 canvases in Auvers in just three months.  Vertical greens in two shades make up a row of crops in a field with diagonals and horizontals in yellow greens and yellow browns forming a path and foreground for a view between two pear trees at the distant Prussian blue roofed chateau.  The sky is a brilliant yellow of horizontal and diagonal strokes shining through the tree limbs and throwing reflected light against the roof.  Heavily impasto in his application of paint, the vibrant energy of an afternoon yielding to a setting sun is sought in a careful combination of complimentary colors.

This painting was meant to hang as a pendant in between two related paintings in Vincent’s eye:  “The Plain at Auvers” and “Undergrowth with Two Figures”, both painted in Auvers within the same timeframe as “Landscape with the Chateau of Auvers at Sunset”.  He saw the colors and their saturation to be complimentary and more brilliant when all three were viewed together.
