This self portrait completed sometime over the winter of 1887 and 1888 shows Vincent’s increasing preoccupation with color and emotion in brushtroke. Here he has chosen to use a radiating cadmium red light background and the shade on his forehead, lips, beard and ears all being relayed in a deeper cadmium red. All brushstrokes seem to radiate out from the nose and eyes which are again a deep emerald green.
