Detailed Image Link

A very pointillist influenced Vincent experiments with a radiating blue and orange stippled background with the artist clad in a multicolored grey hat created over the Winter of 1887 and 1888 in Paris. All is set against an increasingly familiar deep cobalt background with patterned brushstrokes in a halo pattern about his hat and head. Vincent uses vertical, horizontal and diagonal strokes of varying whites, blues, oranges, yellows and browns and a drastically more open pallet and willingness to combine and interplay multiple color combinations are evident.  This and a few other self portraits are among the last paintings he will create in Paris before he moves to Arles.
