The Green Wheat Field behind the Asylum

The Green Wheat Field behind the Asylum

"And as for myself, for the moment I still fear the noise and the bustle of Paris and I left immediately for the country – to an old village. Here there are roofs of mossy thatch which are superb, and of which I’ll certainly do something. Then I think that the doctor to whom I’ve been recommended will absolutely let me be as if nothing were wrong. In the last few days at St-Rémy I worked in a frenzy. Big bouquets of flowers, violet irises, big bouquets of roses, Landscapes." To Willemien van Gogh. Auvers-sur-Oise, on or about Wednesday, 21 May 1890

Description:

The Related Image is a drawing made of the same view some months before the painting – around December of 1889.

The Compare Images are paintings created from the same view looking out from his studio cell window (he slept in another room of the asylum on the same floor) over Vincent’s 12 month stay at the asylum.

Painted in Vincent’s final week in the Asylum at Saint Remy, he writes to his sister of the painting and others done in those final days in Provence – this is one of the “Landscapes” he mentions.  He has arrived in Auvers Sur Oise, a small village on the river Oise where Parisiens go for a day or weekend away from the bustle of city life.  This is his final view of the wheat field outside of his barred studio/cell window – one of deep greens of the wheat he has captured the peasants reaping and sowing over his twelve months at Saint Paul De Mausole.

“And as for myself, for the moment I still fear the noise and the bustle of Paris and I left immediately for the country – to an old village.  Here there are roofs of mossy thatch which are superb, and of which I’ll certainly do something.  Then I think that the doctor to whom I’ve been recommended will absolutely let me be as if nothing were wrong.  In the last few days at St-Rémy I worked in a frenzy. Big bouquets of flowers, violet irises, big bouquets of roses, Landscapes.”
