In this self portrait, Vincent practices a more impressionist technique with some pointillist influence.  The blue green stippled background is a slightly darker khaki with Vincent’s forehead being a few shades lighter.  The cobalt stippling of the artist’s lapel seems to carry on to the background in horizontal strokes until their pattern becomes more irregular.  The gaze is still captured in its fierce intensity as Vincent labors to employ the new techniques he is learning.  The green of his eyes is repeated in stippled strokes of his jacket and a reflection of the top and back of his head.
